Rome please take pity on your weary travelers. Rome was one of the worst European experiences I have ever had. This was due to the transportation strike and the fact we couldn't find a cheap place to stay. The first day we walked to all the the sites and spent a lot of time at the train station trying to figure out how to salvage the rest of Rome. On the second day we took the metro saw the Vatican, then spent more time in the train station figuring out how we could just leave Italy. Needless to say Italy isn't a high on 'must return' to see list. Rome does have by far the most impressive collection of significant historical sites of any city I've visited.
